Front axle U joint replacement

This is how I did my front axle U joint replacement. I had to buy a new inner axle due to the thrashing the old one had taken. This was done completely with hand tools and can be done in the field with proper tools.

Necessary tools

Ford Hub tool or punch and hammer (not recommended)
Long 1/2 in breaker bar
2 4" C clamps
Hammer
side cutters
Flat head screwdriver
13mm,14mm,15mm sockets and ratchet
high pressure wheel bearing grease
prybar
wheel wrench
chisel

Start by removing the wheel and outer hub

Remove Cclip retainer with a screwdriver, be careful, it'll go flying. Then remove the outer hub washers and roller bearing

Use the hub tool with breaker bar to loosen outer hub nut. This is really really tight. You might need a piece of pipe to break it loose. I did.
Remove outer nut, washer with holes in it and then the inner nut.
Once that is done, remove the caliper and rotor. (Pics not included, very easy procedure, just knock pins out)
You will see 5 nuts attached to hub

They are 15mm or 13mm, I can't remember. They are on studs not bolts. Do not try to knock them thru. They are a pain to get back in.
Once the nuts are loose, leave them just on a couple of threads and knock the outer hub loose. It will require judicious blows from a hammer. Be careful not to damage the bearing surface. It will probably require a chisel or flat head screwdriver to break the seal.

The axle will now be loose and free at that end. You can change the Ujoint with a C clamp in the vehicle or remove the axle shaft. If doing the driver's side this would be the preferred method. Otherwise the differential needs to be dropped to pull the axle.

On the pass side you can split the centre axle. Snip the retainer on the rubber boot and slide the axle off the slip yoke.

Then the whole outer shaft will slide out,

The Ujoint cups can be pressed out with a C clamp

Before re installing the outer hub, replace the axle bearing and seals. Be warned, this is the only part that I needed power. A Dremel tool was needed to cut the race out

The outer seal comes off with a little "gentle" persuasion

At this point stop, because you will be wanting to throw tools. Sit down a have one or a few of these

This is the kit for the inner axle seal.

Reinstall is the reverse of disassembly.

When putting the bearings in, tighten the inner hub nut till the wheel is tight, then back it off a hair till the wheel rolls tightly. Put the holy washer thing on so that the pin on the inner nut is in a hole, and then tighten the outer nut on. There is a recommended torque but I just put it realyy f%^king tight. If the axle doesn't come out far enuff to install the clip, it could be that the seals are not fully on. I stuck my breaker bar into the Ujoint and pushed it with my legs and Voila, the axle popped out far enuff.

Back together

My trusty helpers.

Guess which one was more help...And which one drank more beer?

That was my experience, Hope I didn't forget anything. Good luck.
